ORGANIZE A SERVICE-LEARNING FAIR OR EXPO

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Use the National Learn & Serve Challenge to raise awareness of upcoming service-learning activities or opportunities. Organize a service-learning fair to give teachers, young people, and community leaders a chance to exhibit and promote ideas and opportunities for new or ongoing service-learning experiences.

RESOURCES YOU CAN USE:
  • Creating a Service-Learning Display Tipsheet
  • National Learn & Serve Challenge Placard for Exhibit Tables
HERE’S HOW YOU DO IT:

Step 1. Designate the day, time, and location of your service-learning fair or expo. Work with school officials and/or community leaders to secure an appropriate time and space to host your event. You may decide to host your fair during lunch or recess to attract students while in school. Or you may decide to host your event at a community organization or popular youth hangout after school or on the weekend. Be sure to provide tables for exhibitors to use for their displays.

Step 2. Invite youth, teachers, or community members to exhibit at your service-learning fair or expo. Make a list of teachers planning to use service-learning in their classrooms. Or create a list of community organizations willing to host young people engaged in service-learning. Encourage them to set up a simple display to feature upcoming service-learning opportunities. Ask them to provide pamphlets or information to help others get involved.

Step 3. Create a comprehensive list of the service-learning exhibitors participating in your expo. This list will help participants navigate the various opportunities presented at your service-learning fair. The list can also be used as a future reference list for young people interested in participating in service-learning. Consider asking exhibitors to provide a brief description of their service-learning opportunity and/or organization so you can create a directory of opportunities.

FUN IDEAS:
  • Encourage youth to visit multiple display tables or exhibits by creating a Service-Learning Passport. Participants can receive a stamp or sticker upon visiting and talking to a representative from each organization. Consider holding a drawing or giveaway for participants who receive a fully-stamped passport.
  • Consider playing the Bring Learning to Life DVD on a computer or on a television in the background during your service-learning fair or expo. You may also want to designate a few minutes to make a few remarks to the crowd and also play the public service announcement at this time.
